Dry hair: what can you do about it?
Is the shine in your hair hard to find? Is your hair difficult to style, and does it even feel a bit like straw? Then you probably suffer from dry hair. Did you know that dry hair due to temperature changes mainly occurs in winter? And that long and curly hair becomes dry more quickly? Getting older also plays a role: the chance of dry hair increases with age. This is because your hair naturally produces less oil.
These are all not very encouraging facts, but there is no reason to panic with dry hair. With the right care, it can be easily remedied. You can read more about that later. First, we will look at how you recognize dry hair and how it occurs.

HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE DRY HAIR?
Dry hair is easy to recognize by the following characteristics:
- Your hair is dull and feels rough.
- There are a lot of tangles and knots in your hair.
- Your hair is frizzy, unmanageable and often does not fit well.
- Your hair is static and unruly.
- You have split ends and your hair breaks easily.
If you suffer from dry hair, chances are you also suffer from a dry scalp.
WHAT CAUSES DRY HAIR?
Dry hair is caused by too low sebum production. The reasons for low sebum production vary, making it sometimes difficult to determine the precise cause. For example, hormone fluctuations may disrupt sebum production. This happens, for example, during pregnancy, menopause, and the use of certain medications and anesthesia.
It is also possible that you disrupt sebum production yourself, for example by washing your hair too often with products that contain harsh ingredients. Frequent visits to the pool or a dip in the sea also do not benefit sebum production. Also, be careful about blow-drying or styling the hair too much. Did you know that even the wrong brush can cause hair problems such as dry hair?
The condition of the hair cuticles also plays a role in dry hair. If the hair cuticles do not fit properly, moisture escapes from your hair faster. This can cause your hair to become dry. The fact that hair cuticles do not fit properly often means that your hair is damaged. The causes of this damage vary. Maybe you color your hair often? Or are you a little too enthusiastic about using a styling tool and excessive use of a brush?
TREAT DRY HAIR
Because there is always a cause for dry hair - even though it is sometimes difficult to determine - it is also easy to treat. We list the most important tips for dry hair below:
Wash your hair and scalp with the right products
There is a natural fat layer on your scalp that protects the scalp. By washing your hair and scalp with a shampoo that contains aggressive ingredients, you damage the protective layer and dry out the scalp and therefore the hair. Therefore, for dry hair, use a shampoo and conditioner that are kind to the scalp. Mediceuticals offers various shampoos that gently cleanse without drying out the scalp and hair. In addition, it is important not to wash your hair with too hot water. This will only cause damage to the hair. Wash your hair with lukewarm water and rinse it with cold water at the end. This causes the hair cuticles to close, making them retain moisture better.
Give your hair a boost
The hair has to endure a lot every day, so it is important to give your hair a restorative treatment every now and then. This can be done, for example, with the Healthy Hair Kit from Mediceuticals. This kit consists of a 3-step program for the recovery and protection of fine, dry, damaged, or chemically treated hair. These 3 products restore the moisture balance, shine and elasticity of the hair. In addition, the hair gets more volume and resilience.
Make sure you get enough vitamin A
Vitamin A is important for sebum production. To get it back up to normal, it is necessary to get enough vitamin A. To do this, you eat products rich in vitamin A, such as meat, fish, dairy products, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, oranges and tangerines. If you are unable to get enough vitamin A from your diet, you can also take a vitamin supplement.
Protect your hair against external influences
With dry hair, it is important not to expose your hair to too many extremes. Therefore, protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or cap or using a protective UV spray. In addition, do not expose your hair too much to the swimming pool or seawater. The chlorine in the swimming pool and the salt in the sea have a cleansing effect, removing sebum from your hair just like shampoo. So don't go swimming for a while or make sure your hair doesn't get wet while swimming. This can be done, for example, by wearing a swimming cap.
Give your scalp a massage
Perhaps dry hair still has its advantages. A head massage is a very good way to combat dry hair. It works like this: a massage of the scalp stimulates sebum production. And by moving your hands through the entire hair, those natural fats spread well. This makes a head massage a real boost for dry hair.
Be careful with styling tools
Blow-drying, curling, or styling the hair: you use heat tools with a temperature of up to 230 degrees. This makes these styling tools one of the main reasons for dry hair. With dry hair, it is therefore better to avoid using these tools for a while. Can you really live without a hairdryer? Then choose a lower temperature setting. Blow-drying will take longer, but it is much better for your hair. It is also wise to treat your hair with a heat protection product before blow-drying, such as the Defend leave-in conditioner from Mediceuticals.
Be careful with a brush
The effect of a brush through the hair is often underestimated. Did you know, for example, that brushing too hard with a dry scalp is really out of the question? Brushing the hair harshly will only make the dryness and itching worse. Therefore, always take your time to brush your hair. You will be doing your scalp (and your hair too, by the way) a great favor. To protect the hair and scalp you can choose our Scalpro brush. This brush detangles the hair easily and glides effortlessly through the hair. In addition, the brush is made with silicone pins that help protect the scalp and hair.
Avoid chemical treatments
Do you regularly have your hair colored or permed? Then that could also be the cause of your dry hair. The chemical treatment gives your hair a boost every time. Hair that is in good condition can absorb this fairly well, especially if you take extra good care of your hair after the treatment. For dry hair, these types of treatments are an extra burden, so it is better to stop them temporarily.
Take care of your hair with nourishing care products
Dry hair temporarily needs extra care. In addition to a nourishing shampoo and conditioner, it is recommended to use a hair mask. At Mediceuticals® we have the nourishing MX Dual Therapy mask. This unique mask repairs and revitalizes the hair. It hydrates and detangles and returns the scalp and hair to optimal condition. In addition, it protects your hair against UV radiation and is also very suitable for colored hair.
SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR DRY HAIR
Dry hair is annoying, but fortunately, it can be treated well. By taking extra good care of your hair and treating it with care, your hair will eventually regain its shine. Use the right products, be careful with anything that can damage your hair and be kind to your hair. And most importantly: give it some time. Because the cause is not always easy to determine, it may take some time before you know what works for your hair. Therefore, give your hair the time it needs to recover.
